Been a while since I posted about Dwarf Fortress

The frozen wasteland that is the fetid glacier. Heinous goo coats the surface and regularly rains down, provoking nausea and despair in any unfortunate enough to find themselves here. But beneath the surface our kobolds have carved out a cozy lair, safe from their enemies.

Priorities

While the fortress is able to produce its own food, clothes, and steel, several important resources, primarily lumber, are entirely dependent upon imports. With a frozen wasteland on the surface and a forgotten beast rampaging through the caverns, local wood production will be stalled until either the caverns are secured or the underground tree farm is completed.

Import Substitution

Due to a lack of local wood production (as well as an initial lack of crops), The industrious inhabitants of Routwhiskers have made use of other local resources instead. Jet pots are used as an alternative to wooden barrels, their lighter weight even making them superior for hauling.

(note, the below requires the bone crafting and the fermented milk mods, respectively)

Animal bone provides an alternative resource to wood for other important furniture like beds and storage bins.

And while it is no longer our sole source of alcohol, our kobolds still produce occasional batches of pig milk liquor alongside more traditional plant and fruit based alcohols.

Progress

Routwhiskers is slowly coming together, and several major projects have all been completed within a short timeframe of each other.

Watermill powered millstones have replaced querns, increasing efficiency and making dyes and flours actually worthwhile to mass produce.

The tree farm has successfully been flooded and drained, and within a few years should start producing wood.

A magma tube was discovered in the second cavern layer, and now magma smelters and forges will reduce pressure on our limited stockpile of coal co*ke, allowing it to be used exclusively for steel, and allowing us to produce enough steel to equip a proper professional military squad, rather than the poorly equipped and ad hoc militia currently active.

THE PIG SEES ALL

Pigs are versatile animals. They are a good source of meat, bones, leather, tallow, and horn (hooves count as horns for crafting), and are also one of the only milkable animals that do not need to graze. Just stick a bunch of pigs in a room and over time you'll just have more pigs in the room. In our soil scarce ice fortress, this makes their meat and cheese important food sources.

BUT PIGS HAVE ANOTHER USE. Tame animals can provide vision and discover hidden enemies just like kobolds. And since pigs don't need to graze, you can safely put them in a sealed watchtower to keep an eye out for thieves and werebeasts looking to sneak into your fortress.

Security

As several seasons worth of merchants failed to arrive due to an inconvenient goblin siege (now dealt with), and our underground tree farm yet to have any growth, our kobolds have ventured into the caverns under the guard of our first military squad. So far all is well, and nothing has attempted to eat the woodcutters.

The second siege this year

Looks like we're not getting our winter caravan either...

Good thing we're stocked up on wood and other essential import goods

Pouring money into the local library

Everything in the library is made out of billon and fine pewter, and the hallways have been artfully engraved.

Now we just need more books and parchment...

The basic structure of the main entrance is completed, though morale among the workers has taken a beating due to the harsh weather on the surface. Thankfully all further work, such as finishing the pits and trap tunnels, takes place in or underneath the space already enclosed.

Most of the rest of the sapling should develop late this year or early next year, as it takes roughly 3 years for trees in the farm to reach full production capacity. Trees shouldn't be harvested immediately though, as they yield more logs if we allow them to grow further.
