It will center on Recreational Trails Program (RTP) funding and understanding that/how it is different in every state, and how to find ones that are local/regional. The presenter will touch on different trail and project types, which would play into evaluating whether your project is a good fit for the grant.

Federal Funding for Active Transportation Connectivity

US Department of Transportation: Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment Program (ATIIP)

The ATIIP projects will help improve the safety, efficiency, and reliability of active transportation networks and communities; improve connectivity between active transportation modes and public transportation; enhance the resiliency of on- and off-road active transportation infrastructure and help protect the environment; and improve quality of life in disadvantaged communities through the delivery of connected active transportation networks and expanded mobility opportunities.

Eligible organizations will be able to create plans or implement active transportation networks that connect destinations within or between communities or create plans or implement an active transportation spine connecting two or more communities, metropolitan regions, or States. The ATIIP also provides an opportunity for eligible organizations to enhance their overall transportation network by integrating active transportation facilities with transit services, where available, to improve access to public transportation.

Support for Connecting People to Forests

National Forest Foundation: Matching Awards Program

Through MAP, the NFF provides funds for projects that directly benefit America’s National Forests and Grasslands. MAP pairs federal funds provided through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Forest Service with non-federal dollars raised by award recipients, multiplying the resources available to benefit the National Forest System.

MAP funding criteria focus on projects that inspire participants to get personally involved in caring for their public lands. Projects funded under MAP must involve the public through in-person engagement, and provide benefit to the National Forest System.

Project types include community engagement and stewardship activities.

Youth Service America: 9/11 Day of Service Grant

YSA’s We Serve to Remember 9/11 Day of Service Grants are for organizations, schools, and youth changemakers—aged 5 to 25—to lead service projects on or around September 11, 2024. Programming efforts should also honor and pay tribute to those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, their families, and those who rose in service in response to that tragedy.

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) is seeking proposals from publicly owned or operated marinas in Alabama for projects that would provide docking facilities for transient vessels that are 26 feet or greater in length and non-trailerable. Proposals received will be submitted for consideration to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for funding under the Boating Infrastructure Grant Program – Tier I and Tier II.

Quadratec: Quadratec Cares “Energize the Environment” Grant

Quadratec supports enthusiasts working towards improving our environment. By doing so, we believe all of us can positively influence a new generation of outdoor lovers, help keep our recreational facilities and trails free of litter, and promote a better understanding of what makes our environmental world tick.

Examples of projects include: 1) trail building or restoration projects, 2) park beautification events, 3) litter prevention initiatives, 4) Earth Study missions, 5) Sustainable Land Management activities, 6) community environmental educational projects, and 7) youth educational engagement events.

Revitalizing Small Towns

T-Mobile: Hometown Grants (Summer)

The T-Mobile Hometown Grants program funds projects to build, rebuild, or refresh community spaces that help foster local connections in your town. Projects should be shovel-ready, physical builds or improvements that can be completed within 12 months of receiving Hometown Grants funding.

Examples of eligible projects include but are not limited to: adaptive uses of older and historic buildings into community gathering spaces, improvements to outdoor parks or trails, and technology projects for the public library.

Support for OHV Safety, Education, and Land Access

Yamaha: Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative (Summer)

The Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative is dedicated to those who work and play outdoors including, but not limited to, those who rely on off-highway vehicles (OHVs) to ride, camp, hunt or fish.

Supporting the outdoor enthusiast, the Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative’s mission is to provide practical support for efforts that promote safe, responsible use of OHVs, educate the public on proper recreational land use and wildlife conservation practices, and protect appropriate and sustainable access to public lands.

Each quarter, Yamaha accepts applications from non-profit or tax exempt groups (clubs & associations), public riding areas (local, state and federal), outdoor enthusiast associations and land conservation organizations, and communitieswith an interest in protecting, improving, expanding and/or maintaining access for safe, responsible and sustainable use by motorized off-road vehicles. Our committee will review each application and award fundsto deserving projects.

Supporting Involvement of Military Families in National Park and Public Land Experiences

National Park Service: Military Families Outdoors Program

The National Park Service (NPS), the Department of Defense, Defense Health Agency (DoD) have a partnership focused on promoting the health and wellness of active-duty military service members and their families through positive engagement experiences with national parks, public lands, and waterways. These experiences will promote healthy lifestyle habits and inspire families to become environmental stewards of national parks.

Types of programming offered should fit into four main stages:

  • Invitation – participants learn about opportunities through strategic communications.

  • Introduction – participants experience a “short dose” of nature through opportunities such as drop-in events or day trips to nearby national parks, public lands, and waterways.

  • Engagement – participants experience a “deep dose” of nature through opportunities such as multi-day and overnight experiences in national parks, public lands, and waterways.

  • Empowerment – participants embrace the health benefits of nature and feel confident incorporating outdoor experiences into their lifestyle independently through self-guided trips, volunteerism, employment, or other means.
