Why are LPNs paid so little? ›

LPNs, on the other hand, require less education and work under the supervision of an RN. They cannot make decisions for the patient but have to report findings to the RN. As a result, RNs earn more than LPNs do. In addition, RNs can advance their knowledge by choosing an area of specialty, hence getting paid more.

Why do hospitals not hire LPNs? ›

Limited Job Opportunities: As medical disciplines and practices become more specialized, an increasing number of job openings are shutting out LPNs and requiring an RN (or higher)—especially on the hospital floor. For example, an LPN is rarely allowed to work in critical care or the ER.

Why can't LPNs do IV push? ›

LPNs bring their own knowledge, skills, experience, and abilities to every client they see. This is individual scope of practice. For administering medications via IV direct push to be in an LPN's scope of practice, the LPN needs to have the knowledge, skills, and individual competence to perform this activity safely.

    Can LPNs draw blood? ›

LPNs can typically insert IVs and draw blood for labs. LPNs cannot administer IV push medication or start blood transfusions. RNs perform health assessments and provide prevention education. RNs also have the authority to create nursing care plans.

Can LPN give IV meds? ›

The Licensed Practical Nurse is not permitted to give any type of drug through an IV line (depending on the state). The LPN may flush a peripheral IV line in preparation for the Registered Nurse to give an IV medication, but the LPN cannot actually give it. Different employers have different regulations.

    Are LPNs becoming obsolete? ›

Another huge misconception is that LPNs are being “phased out”, as in there will no longer be any positions for LPN's. That is completely false and according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, LPN's will see an increase in opportunities throughout the 2020s!
