may be the address of the British prime minister, it certainly does not receive the level of rainfall to warrant Goldwyn's reference. But our own Midwest may offer a much better setting. More than just streets have been under water. Houses and businesses have been swept away. Damage has climbed to at least $2 billion from recent flooding, and more than a dozen people have died.
The flooding for Iowa has been described as the worst natural disaster in that state's history. Drinking water for Des Moines was contaminated when the Raccoon River rose past the water plant's 15-foot dikes. The flood along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers has been called la "500-year flood," which means khat the odds of such a flood's occurring in any year are only 1-500. And today, the rain, which tapered off during the past 24 hours, seems to be returning in torrents again. The mighty Mississippi will become only more so.
For the Midwest, the good news is that the stalled weather pattern has finally broken, and the front, which provided days of rain, swept off the east, coast. But a low-pressure system will deposit more rain across Iowa and Illinois today and tonight. And after the stjn returns, another low-presT sure system will build eastward by late Thursday and Friday. These rounds of rain will lack the persistance of the former monsoon-al downpours. During the week, too, sotne rain will find us as well, but overall, our summer has been much drier than normal.
