Types of BurnsFirst-Degree Burns:Description: Affect only the outer layer of the skin (epidermis).Symptoms: Redness, minor swelling, and pain.Example: Sunburn.Second-Degree Burns:Description: Affect both the outer layer and the underlying layer of skin (dermis).Symptoms: Blisters, severe pain, and swelling.Example: Scalding from hot liquids.Third-Degree Burns:Description: Extend through the dermis and affect deeper tissues.Symptoms: White or blackened, charred skin that may be numb.Example: Prolonged contact with flames.Quick Cooling is Key: Cooling a burn with running water for 10-20 minutes within three hours of the injury can reduce the severity and depth of the burn.First Aid for Burns: Applying ice directly to a burn can cause further damage to the tissue. Use cool, running water instead.Burns Can Cause Shock: Severe burns can lead to shock, characterized by pale, clammy skin, weakness, and shallow breathing. Immediate medical attention is needed.For Minor Burns (First-Degree and Small Second-Degree Burns):Cool the Burn: Run cool (not cold) water over the burn for 10-20 minutes or until the pain subsides.Protect the Burn: Cover it with a sterile, non-adhesive bandage or clean cloth.For Severe Burns (Large Second-Degree and Third-Degree Burns):Call for Help: Dial 911 or seek immediate medical assistance.Protect the Burn: Cover with a cool, moist, sterile bandage or clean cloth.
